Message from the University to All Faculty/Staff It is time once again for renewal of campus parking permits. Significant events in the last year have resulted in major changes related to parking. The primary change is that effective July 1, 2008 the parking permit fee structure at the University of Illinois will undergo a change. The Illinois Supreme Court recently ruled that parking fees are a mandatory subject of bargaining. In response to the ruling, representatives of the University began a process of negotiating parking rates with unions represented on campus. A number of agreements have been reached regarding a sliding scale parking rate based on an employee’s salary. In keeping with the requirements of labor law, represented employees whose union contracts have not yet come up for negotiation will remain at the FY08 parking rate of $35.58 per month. The shift from a common flat rate to a percentage rate will result in a monthly cost decrease for many employees. For employees who will pay the maximum designated flat rate amount, the maximum increase will not exceed $4.42 per month. Chancellor Richard Herman and Provost Linda Katehi have chosen to extend the new parking rate structure to all non-represented employees. Therefore, beginning FY09 all non-represented employees at the University will be charged .7% of their annual base salary for rental lot permits, up to a designated flat rate amount. For FY09 that flat rate will be $40.00 per month. The Parking Department is working to implement the changes in the rate structure and will soon be communicating with permit holders regarding the renewal process for the coming year. Other News |
